Digital signals: limit & proximity switches; other switch types; NPN vs PNP outputs; shaft encoders.
Temperature transducers: thermocouples vs RTDs; optical pyrometers; calibration
Transmitters: why; standard outputs; 2-wire vs 4-wire and why; dumb vs smart transmitters
Pressure measurement: aspects of pressure; Gauge-, Absolute- & Differential pressure; practical tips regarding measurement; calibration of pressure transmitters.
Level measurement: point vs continuous measurement; common measuring techniques, pros and cons; calibration. Types of point level measurement in action.
Flow measurement: Liquid vs Gas; restrictions and ΔP; Pitot tubes; Vortex Shedding; Mag Flow; Coriolis; Thermal Mass Flow;
Control valves: valve and actuator types; positioners; valve problems. Calibration.
Loop Control: Basics of PID; process dynamics and tuning; impact and handling of dead-time. Cascade /Feed-Forward /ratio control using a realistic computer simulation.
PLC programming & fault-finding: using a PLC that conforms to IEC 61131 specs, the essence of programming is taught, primarily for logical control, but incorporating timers, counters, number systems & variable types, comparators and simple arithmetic. A working model of a conveyor belt makes the experience as realistic as possible.
Variable Speed Drives: Basics of how VSDs work; the main components; advantages of VSDs; problems and pitfalls; system configuration. Specific VSDs can also be catered for, given enough notice and enough demand.
This program is designed to be as hands-on as possible, with a very practical bias so that people attending get to grips with what is required in the field. Fault-finding is emphasized, as well as ways of preventing future problems.
